One of the confusions that I could notice even for the biologists is the family names. When you visit to certain botanical gardens or nurseries, they put label on/near the plants to notify you about the basic info like common name, Latin name, family and provenance. The name for families are easy to recognize because they ended with suffix '...aceae' (pronounced "aer-see") as in Fagaceae ("Fa-gay-see") which is the family of oaks and beeches.

Plants are intricate biological entities with a long evolutionary history, stretching back hundreds of millions of years. Today's plants are adapted to living in particular terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem such as desert, tropical rain forest, swamp and lake. Both ecosystems, which differ by their average temperature and annual rainfall, are largely defined by the types of plants that live there.
